ABSTRACT

Music as the universal language can touch any aspects oh human’s life. It is often used as an instrument of expressing feeling and emotion. Music touches any aspects of mankind for its lyric, melody or instrument. Lyric is a part of music. Lyric and music are two different things, but their combination can make various kinds of songs. English children song is one of them. And five of them are taken as the representative of this research.
The writer takes and describes the sentence patterns of songs by using the tree diagram proposed by Diane D. Bornstein. The sentence patterns deal only with Kernel and transformed sentence of five English songs sung by kindergarten of Nurul Hikmah such as: My Son, The Five Principles, Little Muslims, Thinking and The Five salaah-times. The results of the study are supposed to be useful for all people in general and students of MADURA UNIVERSITY particularly, who are interested in studying syntax and having the same research.
This study is written and explained by using a descriptive and qualitative method. The data were taken from the lyrics of English songs sung by kindergarten of Nurul Hikmah. Some steps in taking and collecting the data are reading all the texts, selecting the lyrics of all the songs, observing the lyrics and finally taking five songs as the representative songs. Before presenting the data, the writer analyses the data through some steps, writing down all the lyrics, analyzing them, mentioning the formula and concluding the sentence patterns of the lyrics of the phrase in the form of phrase structure rules.
Having analyzed the data, the writer finally found that there were twenty forms of the sentence patterns. The common form is the one which consist of noun phrase plus verb phrase. A sentence does not merely go down into noun phrase plus verb phrase only, but also go down into noun phrase only or verb phrase only. Some lyrics can be classified into phrases.
From the twenty forms of sentence patterns above, the writer finally concludes that in English song’s lyrics transformed sentence appear in less number than the kernel sentence.
Finally, the writer suggests the others who are interested in studying syntax to make this study perfect and she also suggests that they will analyze other songs of literary works with the different theory.

CHAPTER I : INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study 1
Language as a means of verbal and non verbal communication. Languange as a vehicle of communication, language is every where, it permeates our thoughts, mediates our relation with others, and it even creeps into our dreams. Wardhaugh in Emmit book (1997 : 76) said that language is a system of arbitrary vocal symbols used for human communication. Another definition about language is centred on meaning, it is the most powerful and pervasive means humans have for making and sharing meaning.
As one of them, English plays an important role in the advancement of science and education. Today, English as first foreign language has been taught for every grade of schools as kindergarten, elementary school, junior and senior high school. English sentences are often referred to as structured string of words, it depends on the position of words in the sentence, the relationship between words, the type of words used. It is named by syntax that used to describe or explain the way in which words are related in sentence. As we know that syntax is a branch of linguistic that studies the internal structure of sentence and the interrelationship among the internal parts. English is taught in the classroom it makes sense to appreciate that there are a variety of ways to learn it, how to make meaning and to share it, for example listening, talking, making diagrams and producing plays. Separating the learning experience into little boxes of oral language, music, drama etc (Emmit 1997 : 6).
Music brings us to express our feeling and emotion. It is said that music is a universal language, so it is can touch our heart when we enjoy it. Music is the arrangement of sounds in a pleasing sequence or combination to be sung or played on instruments (Hornby : 1995;766). Music also reduce anxiety and inhibition in second language students. Furthermore, it is a great motivator in that its lyrics are often very meaningful. Human emotions are frequently expressed in highly charged situations. Through music, language easily finds roots in the experience of students at any age or proficiency level .
Today, many of English songs exist in our country and a large number of Indonesian like English song included the teens. In fact, the majority of Indonesian like to listen and sing English songs, unexceptly kindergarten students of Nurul Hikmah. Nurul Hikmah is one of the famous and favorite kindergarten in Pamekasan, it has good facilities and professional teachers which teach English songs to their students. At beginning levels as kindergarten, music can be used to teach basic vocabulary as colours, names of things and names of people are only a few of the concepts that can be taught through music ( Short 1996 : 202).
Children like enjoying and singing English songs because their lyrics are simple and easy to understand. The simplicity and ease of the lyrics make the writer interested in discussing some of English songs of Nurul Hikmah kindergarten by using tree diagrams and making it as the topic of her thesis entitled “A Syntactic Analysis on English Songs Sung by Kindergarten Kids of Nurul Hikmah Pamekasan”.
1.2 Problem of the Study 3
Judged from the background of the study that has been stated previously, that the problem of this study is “what are the sentence patterns used in some English songs sung by kindergarten kids of Nurul Hikmah?”
1.3 Objective of the Study 3
Based on the problem stated above, this study is intended to describe the sentence patterns used in English songs sung by kindergarten kids of Nurul Hikmah.
1.4 Limitation of the Study 3
This study is only limited on the syntactic analysis on some English songs sung by kindergarten kids of Nurul Hikmah. These songs are taken as the object of the study because these songs are simple and easy to understand. There are a great number of English songs but the writer takes only five songs that are quite representative enough to represent the English children songs.
The discussion and the analysis of the study are based on tree diagrams theory is purposed by Diane D. Bornstein.
1.5 Significance of the Study 4
Study is a kind of scientific writing and it gives some knowledge to the readers. The writer really hopes that the result of the study will be useful for other researchers especially for students of Madura University who don’t know so much about syntax and they will find it easy to study. By reading this study they can get some information and develop their ability or knowledge of English syntax. The writer also hopes that the result of the study will be useful for everyone who may need it.
1.6 Definition of the Key Terms 4
The writer gives some definitions related to the title. There are some key terms that must be defined here, in order to avoid misunderstanding and misinterpretation. Here are the definition of terms:
